CRB check, "international criminal record check", "police check" for au pairs

What record checks are useful for au pair vetting?

From the calls we get there seems to be some confusion over such things as CRB checks and "police checks" for au pairs.

Running a CRB check on an au pair would not normally enhance a vetting procedure much as the vast majority of au pairs (or at least those we deal with) have never lived in Britain and therefore have had little chance of acquiring a criminal record here.

While you may come across the term "international criminal record check" during your au pair search, an overseas criminal record check in a single country may well be what is intended (and if the right country is chosen this is indeed very useful).

The Hungarian records check we use is the official one used for certification within Hungary and this has now been enhanced to indicate, in addition to the absence of criminal record, that there are no bars to employment and no ongoing proceedings.

Of course even when you hire a well vetted au pair risk is never totally eliminated, but it is important to get it into perspective. As it is easy these days for an au pair to find a host family over the internet rather than undergo the vetting procedures of a recruitment agency we would venture that the risk involved in hiring an au pair through a reputable 'human' channel is now even lower.

Please get in touch if you need an au pair. We can send you profiles free of charge and with no obligation to recruit.
